Getting Ready Guide
Thank you for choosing me to photograph your family!
Getting to know the personality & dynamic of each family I work with is an absolute joy. My hope is to document those qualities in an honest & thoughtful way. With just a little planning ahead, you’ll feel at ease during our session so your own personality & emotion can come through… & we’ll have a great time creating beautiful photographs.
This guide is one way to get you ready & relaxed for your session. It’s filled with the helpful tips I’ve gathered over my 18 years photographing families.
If you find you have a question that’s not covered here, please don’t hesitate to reach out - it’s always great to fine tune the information here with your input!! You can call me at 415-641-4226 or email meg@megmessina.com.
Before Our Session
-
You know your children best & what will get them excited about our time together. Some kids are super outgoing & don’t need much notice to jump in & have fun… some little ones are more shy & might need a heads-up to feel at ease. For younger kids, it’s usually nice to them know that a friend will be coming to hang out & have fun making photographs. Sometimes this sparks their own ideas & they get really excited to participate in creating the images… I can’t tell you how many cool photo ideas have come from a kid who is excited to share something with me!

at home
For most family sessions, photographing at home is wonderful! I find it’s the place younger children feel most at ease & it gives a nice pace & flexibility for parents as well. Home sessions are where the most genuine moments happen effortlessly & it’s fun to have images of real life in the space where you spend your days together. It's also the perfect location to capture a combination of lifestyle & documentary imagery. Here are a couple tips specific to photographing in the home…
We’ll move around the house a bit to change it up but we’ll photograph most in the room with the best light. Don’t worry if it’s the bedroom or even kitchen… I promise awesome portraits can be made in a pretty small space if there’s good light.
You can straighten up but don’t go crazy. Clearing a little clutter before is fine as it gives us more background options but no need to dust & deep clean… that level of detail won’t come through on photos. Most importantly, be true to your family dynamic & daily life... remember these images are little time capsules of real life & real life doesn’t require a perfectly styled room.
out in the world
Sessions outside the home at a special location are also great! I love to help brainstorm spots so don’t hesitate to reach out for ideas. Maybe there’s a park or beach you go to all the time, or an ice cream place your kids love. I find the best non-home locations are the familiar ones! Here are a few tips if we’re having our session outside the home…
Consider the season & location. Many days in San Francisco have a lovely, foggy look... drizzly days in the countryside can be awesome with rain boots & umbrellas… in the height of summer pack the swim trunks & we’ll head to the river!
If we get some truly bad weather, we can switch to your home, get creative with semi-indoor locations, or reschedule.
Time of day is important - especially outside! Photography is all about light & certain outdoor locations will provide better light in the early morning or late afternoon. I’m a bit of a light fanatic so if you have a spot in mind I can determine the best time to shoot there!
-
To keep myself and my families extra safe, I'm taking extra precautions! I'm fully vaccinated and will continue to wear a mask for newborn sessions and at any other requests, as well as being mindful of scheduling sessions with time in-between. We'll check in the week of our session and, should any signs of illness arise we can easily reschedule. Taking care of one another through this time is the most important!
-
My most important & useful advice here is: wear what you feel good in. Truly nothing photographs better than confidence & ease. This goes right along with the notion that you all should look like yourselves! If you guys love to dress up, please do! If you’re comfy in your PJs on the couch, that’s beautiful! I have one family that has been photographed in their halloween costumes for many years because that’s what they love! When you see your images, I want you to be able to look at the emotion, personality, & connection in them… the clothing is absolutely secondary. All that being said, here are a couple tips that can help you arrive at the clothing choices you feel great in!
Whether formal or casual, clothes you can move in are key - especially with little kids!
It’s nice to let each family member shine in their own way so coordination is fine but don’t get too matchy.
A couple things that can be distracting are big text & logos, neon colors, & transition lenses in glasses so do avoid those if possible.
If we’re photographing in your home, bare feet look best! Just a heads-up so the whole family can avoid sock lines.
Flowing fabrics, bright colors, cool prints, & rich textures are absolutely magical on film. So don’t be scared to get creative as long as you feel good!
-
If our session is happening outside the home, be sure to pack a snack or eat a good meal before we start, it really helps keep everyone happy - even the adults! If we’re photographing in your home, even easier. We can grab food as needed & incorporate it into the session! If your kids love making pancakes, or having backyard picnics, or making an absolute mess of their faces with popsicles, let’s document that! You might be surprised at what gorgeous images can come from an everyday mealtime.
During Our Session
-
I like to arrive a few minutes before our official start time so don’t be stressed or surprised by an early arrival. It’s nice to get settled, say hi to the kids without a camera in front of my face (especially if it’s our first time working together!), & explore your home for the best light. Since my photographs are a combination of lifestyle & documentary, there’s no need to be “camera ready” the moment I arrive… capturing some of the preparation moments can be really fun & it's a great way to get comfortable with the camera!
-
My sessions don’t have a tight time constraint cause I want it to be a relaxing & natural pace. Typically we’ll be done in about 2 hours. If a family member has to leave for an important appointment but the rest of the family is still available, that's fine! Just let me know ahead of time so I can focus on getting that person in the frame more while they're still available.
-
I know this can feel easier said than done, but the truth is that I’m not expecting you or your kids to be any particular way. Please let the “best behavior” stress gooooooo! Sometimes newborns are fussy, toddlers just want to run around, teens can be moody - it’s all part of the story & it’s all beautiful. I’ve found the less pressure that kids pick up on, the more likely they are to have fun & deliver on some truly awesome, authentic images! I’ll be giving them plenty of direction to make that happen, so don’t worry about adding on… too much feedback can sometimes cause overwhelm - especially for toddlers! All we need is your encouragement & patience so take a deep breath, remember we’ll have plenty of time to create beautiful photos, & just have fun with your family.
After Our Session
-
As soon as our session is done, I package up the film & send it off to my lab… then just like you I wait with excitement for what’s to come! As soon as the scans come back, I get to work editing your final collection - usually around 50-60 images - & upload them to your private gallery.
Once your gallery is ready (4-5 weeks), I’ll be in touch to schedule your 48-hour slideshow window. I like to schedule this time not only cause the slideshow is open for a particular window, but also because I hope you’ll make an event out of it! Seeing your images for the first time is really moving & magical… so put it on your biggest screen & gather the family together to view! You can watch it as many times as you like over those two days & then it’ll be time to decide which of the three collections you’d like to purchase.
Once you’ve selected & paid for your collection, your gallery will open for six weeks, pre-loaded with your print credit (also sent via email), & set for you to download the number of files that corresponds with your collection.
-
downloading files
Once you’ve decided which images you’d like to use for your download credit (collection C has all of them so no need to choose!), I encourage you to download them immediately. The process is simple: select the images & use the down arrow in the upper right corner of your gallery - click on that & the system will walk you through the download process.
Be sure to only select the number of files included in your collection! If you’ve selected more, the download will stop automatically once it reaches the limit. Due to the nature of digital files I’m unable to offer exchanges if the wrong files were selected & downloaded.
The images will download as a zip file, so double-click to expand. I suggest making a copy of the expanded files & saving them in multiple locations - one on your computer & one to the cloud (Dropbox, Google, etc). Multiple copies in different locations helps ensure they won't be lost as technology eventually changes. As convenient & wonderful as digital files are, it’s so important to print your favorites to preserve those images. Which leads us to…
printing images
Every item offered in my store is printed in professional labs & guaranteed to be archival, high-quality, & gorgeous. That’s why I include a substantial print credit in every package & make sure there are lots of options to hold these images in your hands!
Helping families create fine art pieces for their home is inspiring & fun! I'm always here to offer guidance should you need a hand with product selections.I also recognize you may want to print images for yourself & - thanks to those digital files - you absolutely can! I recommend Dickerman Prints for local printing & Artifact Uprising for online prints. Be sure to deselect any color correction options, & upload the original files you downloaded, not copies. The files you receive from me should allow you to print up to 16 x 20”.
-
Once you have your digital files, you are free to print them when, where, & as often as you wish. You can use them for holiday cards, personal & gift prints, & share them on social media - a credit or tag is so appreciated! You cannot resell the images, enter them in contests for prizes, or use them for commercial/business purposes. For example, if you’ve authored a book, you’d need additional permission to use the photos on the cover. Otherwise you’re good to go!

Commonly Asked Questions
-
A: Yes! Once you sign up and make the initial payment, you can book the session immediately - you’ll get a link for the Spring/Summer session calendar right away. After your session takes place, you’ll receive your gallery on the normal schedule (about 5 weeks turnaround) and will be able to download the files and use the print credit right away.
-
A: While I can’t guarantee that a specific date and time will be available, I am putting tons of session options on the self-scheduling calendar. You’ll receive the first calendar (for April-September dates) as soon as your sign up and pay your first installment. The second calendar (for October-March dates) will be released in late September. If you haven’t signed up for the first round of dates, you’ll receive a reminder to sign up for the second!
Friday and weekend session dates are prioritized for members!
Please feel free to reach out if particular dates are important to you and they’re not listed on the session calendar. I’ll do my best to accommodate it!
-
A: Rescheduling for reasons such as illness, bad weather, etc., will be handled the same way as before - we’ll look at the calendar and figure it out. If you realize your date won’t work for another reason more in advance (like a work or travel conflict), I’ll work with you to find a new date. Just let me know as soon as you can.
-
A: Absolutely! I include sessions within a 60-mile radius from San Francisco (another perk as it’s only a 30-mile radius for one-time sessions). If you live outside that range, there are a couple options.
One is to plan to come to San Francisco (or within the range) for your session - there are so many lovely locations and I can help brainstorm them!
The other is to pay a separate flat fee for travel to your home. Just reach out and I’ll send you a quote.
-
A: These mini sessions offer a chance to have beautiful, classic, studio-style portraits of each child in your family… kind of like a school portrait, only way better! They’ll take place on 1 to 2 pre-set days per season at a location in San Francisco. I’ll give advance notice on the dates and you’ll schedule with an easy online calendar. Best part is the sessions are quick (about 15 minutes each), fun, and result in a great little portrait collection of you child(ren) over the years.
-
A: Technically you can, but there are a couple things to consider…
First, is that my goal is to keep these spots fairly limited. I want to work with families I’ve photographed before, and ensure I have plenty of scheduling options throughout the year. So spots could fill quickly as people renew.
Second, prices will increase in future years. and rejoining will bring it up to current rates.
One last tip! It’s perfectly fine to skip your session one year and roll it over to the next as long as your membership is maintained. For instance, if you’re expecting a new baby next year and would like two sessions during that time, you can skip and roll it into next year.
